This position is that of Recreation Assistant in the Recreation Therapy Section of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Service at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, WV. The Recreation Therapy Program is designed to provide a variety of recreational activities for the General Medical, Surgical, Intermediate, Nursing Home, and Domiciliary patients that are housed in this facility. These activities are coordinated with appropriate medical and administrative disciplines through the VA Medical Center on a seven day a week basis.

Coordinates the use of the Recreation Center (Building 308 or Hobby Shop Building 401) by scheduling of patient and volunteer activities.
Provides lifeguard services during the swimming pool season. Duties include but are not limited to serving as lifeguard, cleaning the interior of the pool and locker room, and performing Ph and chlorine measures. Enforces swimming pool rules on safety, conduct, and cleanliness.
Maintain/control extensive list of equipment and supplies, reporting any safety violations necessary (work orders), shortages.
Instructs/documents therapeutic treatment of patients assigned to Recreation Center or Swimming Pool by Recreation Therapist for socialization and leisure skills development.
Conducts special participatory tournaments and activities in order to provide diversion and/or meet the therapeutic needs under the guidance of Recreation Therapist.
Observes patients behavior, reactions, participation in order to gather facts and information relation to patients response to the recreational activity and report findings to appropriate Recreation Therapist. Registers volunteers who attend recreation and assists them in the implementation of programs.
Provides guidance and supervision during evenings and weekends for students, volunteers, and incentive therapy workers.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement Monday, July 22, 2013


Time-in-grade:  Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-04) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.  Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: 

  • Group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities.
  • Teachers aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities.
  • Aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service.
  • Aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities.
  • Summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children).
  • Sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop.
  • Aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility.
  • Aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities

Education: Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-05 level. Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelors degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education.

OR

Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-05 level.  To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned).  Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess.  Add the two percentages.  The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-05. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position

KSA 5 -  Ability to communicate effectively.

Physical Requirements: The work requires extensive walking, standing, bending, pushing, and carrying light to heavy recreation equipment to all areas of the Medical Center. Physical strength and agility are necessary for the operation and maintenance of bowling lanes and swimming pool.
